Black Customer Gets Accused Of Stealing His Own Jacket, So He Makes Them Regret It

Being singled out in public can be uncomfortable, having a wrong first impression can be humiliating. Especially when it is racist. 29-year-old James Conley III shared a number of videos showing Old Navy employees being racist. The Old Navy in West Des Moines had its employees accusing Conley of stealing a jacket.

The story has attracted the interest of the entire country, gaining about 113k reactions and about 150k shares on Facebook. His story has opened the eyes of many, and he’s realized how big of an issue racial profiling truly is.

James started his story, saying, “Today I was racially profiled by the Old Navy store in West Des Moines, Iowa in Jordan Creek. I was accused that I didn’t pay for my blue bubble jacket that I got for Christmas that I wore into the store. As I was checking out to purchase some hoodies, I was asked if I wanted to also purchase the jacket that I was wearing.”
He continued, saying, “First I started laughing because I didn’t believe what I was hearing. The store manager Beau Carter was very unprofessional and stereotyped me because I was a Black male.” Allegedly, Conley was told that anytime someone wears Old Navy clothing they have to always scan that customer’s clothing to ensure that it was previously purchased.

James then noted, “After they scan my jacket they try to make me repay for it?? Finally, the District Manager Shannon came out and I made her check the surveillance tape to prove that her and her fellow employees were in the wrong for racially profiling me because of the color of my skin.” It was smart on his part to record all this while it was happening for evidence.

After James released the story, Old Navy decided to release a statement on the situation. They noted, “Earlier this week an Old Navy customer, James Conley III, had an unacceptable experience in our Jordan Creek, Iowa store. The situation was a violation of our policies and values, and we apologize to both Mr. Conley and to those we’ve disappointed.”

They continued, stating, “All of our customers deserve to be treated with respect. Following a thorough investigation of the incident, three employees who were involved have been terminated. We take this matter very seriously.” But regardless of their apologetic statement, James still plans to file a civil rights complaint and then a civil damages lawsuit.
