Well-known restaurateur Joshua Woodward, a former partner in the Table 8 restaurant chain, has pleaded no contest to attempted murder in the death of his unborn child.
Woodward was accused by his pregnant girlfriend of putting a white powder on his finger and touching her with it during sex, resulting in a miscarriage a few hours later, according to the search warrant affidavit obtained by TMZ and New York Daily News. The woman found traces of the white powder in her underwear.
The white powder was found to be misoprostol, a drug which is commonly used for early abortions and to induce labor.
Woodward was allegedly unsuccessful two times in trying to cause his girlfriend to miscarry with the drug before the day it did happen. She was 13 weeks pregnant at the time, New York Daily News reports.
When police encountered Woodward outside his apartment, he allegedly pulled out a “small piece of clear plastic with a white powdery substance” from his pocket and dropped it on the ground, according to the affidavit.
His girlfriend told police that he was unhappy about the pregnancy from the beginning and had asked her to have an abortion.
Police found records on Woodward’s computer of him researching how to terminate a pregnancy, including Internet searches for “ways men have forced abortions” and “evil ways to terminate a pregnancy,” New York Daily News reports.
Last week, Woodward pleaded no contest to secretly giving his girlfriend misoprostol shortly before she miscarried, Los Angeles prosecutors said, according to New York Daily News.
It is expected that Woodward will receive a nine-year prison term.
