Lacey Spears captivated headlines when she was charged with and convicted of murdering her 5-year-old son, Garnett. She had injected a lethal amount of salt into his hospital feeding tube which led to his death. The case is compounded by the fact that she was a “mommy blogger” who made money writing about the ailments her son was going through.
It is believed that Spears has Munchausen by proxy, which is a condition where parent get attention by making their kids sick. Her mommy blog was dedicated to her son and her role as the dutiful mother sticking by her sick child.
Spears has been opening up to author John Glatt who is writing a book about her murder case. She opened up about life in prison, and what a difficult adjustment that has been for her. Also the the relentless bullying that she is subject to from the other inmates. As most people know, criminals adhere to a code in a jail and they go against people who have committed crimes against children.
At the Bedford Hill prison in Westchester County, New York Spears told Glatt: “It’s been brutal here. Crimes involving children are considered the worst here. I hear them talking behind my back calling me ‘baby killer,’ ‘child killer,’ and ‘mother of the year.’ But I know it’s not who I am.”
Spears lamented about the fact that the transition into prison has been very hard for her and that she cannot make any friends or trust anyone. Her sister Rebecca also told Glatt that her sister has been targeted by other inmates who have taken to pouring salt packets onto Spears’ food during meals..
“When she walked through the line and it would be her turn to pick up the tray, someone would put salt packets over her meal and then hand the tray to her,” explains Rebecca. Apparently, the bullying got bad that the corrections officers at the jail offered Spears protective custody, but that meant she would be alone for 23 hours of the day. She declined the offer.
Even though Spears was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to 20 years in jail, she adamantly professes that she is innocent and her son is dead because of hospital staff. When she did an interview with CBS News’48 Hours she said: “I didn’t hurt him. I never poisoned him with salt.”
